Intervening in cases of harassment can be challenging. You might not know what to do or feel unsafe acting alone. Fortunately, there is an intervention method that allows you to involve others: Delegate.

What is Delegate?

Delegate means seeking help from others to address a situation. This can involve other bystanders, but also individuals with more authority, such as a train conductor, security guard, or colleague. The idea is simple: you don’t have to act alone.

Why is Delegate effective?

Delegate works because it harnesses the power of working together. When multiple people are involved, the person being harassed feels supported, and action can be taken more quickly. It also breaks the so-called bystander effect, where people are less likely to act because they assume others will intervene.

Research shows that directly asking other bystanders increases the likelihood of them taking action. A direct question like, “Can you help me?” makes it easier for others to take responsibility.

How can you use Delegate?

  • Ask another bystander for help: Request assistance, such as, “Can you walk with me?” or “Can you help me address this?”
  • Seek help from an authority figure: Engage a train conductor, security guard, or police officer, depending on the severity of the situation.
  • Ask for advice: Discuss the situation with a supervisor or colleague. Together, you can find a safe and effective way to intervene.

The difference you can make

With Delegate, you don’t have to do everything alone. By using the power of teamwork, you ensure that the person being harassed doesn’t face the situation alone. Additionally, collaborating with others allows for more effective and safer intervention.
